Vintage Mystery Progress and Review Site

All right, folks--2011 is here! Let the challenge begin! I am setting up this post as the place to track everyone's progress on the Vintage Mystery Reading Challenge and also to link reviews, if you review the books you read. Please either comment below with the title and author of the book read (plus link for review, if you have one) or send the info to me by email (phryne1969 AT gmail DOT com). I'll update this post with everyone's progress. I think it will be interesting for all the challengers to see what everyone is reading and also to cheer for those who finish their challenge levels. Good luck and have fun with those classic crimes!

Here's another vintage Rex Stout novel about Nero Wolfe and Archie Goodwin. "If Death Ever Slept," published in 1957, finds Archie investigating industrial espionage and possible in-law troubles at a multimillionaire's mansion. It quickly degenerates into murder, of course. Lots of great Archie dialogue here - not as much Wolfe as we might home. You'll find a full review at Classic Mysteries.

I read Enter A Murderer by Ngaio Marsh. I forgot to check the pub date but it is probably 1934 or 1935.

Here's another "post-challenge" add for vintage mystery lovers: John Dickson Carr's "The Plague Court Murders" (written as Carter Dickson in 1934) is back in print. It's the first adventure featuring Sir Henry Merrivale. It's murder in a locked and bolted room, committed virtually under the eyes of the police - yet no killer is in the room, although the weapon, a very distinctive knife, is left in the room with the victim. Full review at Classic Mysteries.

Here's a truly vintage title: "At the Villa Rose," by A. E. W. Mason, first published more than a century ago, in 1910. It was one of the first real detective novels, as Inspector Hanaud of the French Surete tries to determine what really happened on the night an elderly and very rich woman was murdered in her villa. All the evidence points in one direction - but only Hanaud can determine the truth. Great fun. Full review at Classic Mysteries.

Another Michael Innes book worth reading is "A Night of Errors," from 1948. It has all the qualities one expects from Innes. It's witty, funny, scholarly and well-written. There are memorable characters (including one of fiction's most outrageous butlers, named Swindle), gruesome murders, and a great deal of arson. Full review, as always, at Classic Mysteries.

Remember crusading lawyer Perry Mason? He wasn't the only creation of author Erle Stanley Gardner. Another of his characters, The Patent Leather Kid, appeared in "pulp" magazines between 1932 and 1934. They're fun stories. The Kid is a kind of elegant crook, usually fighting on the side of justice as he takes on both Prohibition-era gangsters and corrupt cops, all of whom are out to kill him. Great fun. Just finished re-reading one of my all-time favorites: Fredric Brown's 1951 masterpiece, "Night of the Jabberwock." The hero, Doc Stoeger, a small-town newspaper publisher and Lewis Carroll fan, becomes involved in a fantastic and increasingly deadly plot that leads to murders, wild chases and all kinds of mayhem - enough to fill Doc's paper many times over if he can survive the night. That, unfortunately, is by no means assured...

Just finished a book by an author new to me - Elizabeth Ferrars, who was published in the U. S. as "E.X. Ferrars." Her first book, "Give a Corpse a Bad Name," from 1940, kicked off what was a very successful and popular career. It tells the story of an accident (or was it?) on an English road that left a man dead - a man quickly identified by a local landowner as his son. But the landowner's wife says it's not her son. What's going on? A plot with lots of devious twists and turns. Full review at Classic Mysteries.

And my wrap-up post (for several challenges) is here:

This was one of my favorite challenges of 2011. Thanks so much for hosting.
