Bev's Bookish Fall Break

It's that time again...for Bev's own Fall Break Bookish Extravaganza. And it's all made possible by the Hoosier Hills Food Bank Community Book Fair. Each year I take two days off work so I can go to the opening day of the book fair for the best chance at getting the most vintage mysteries. And then spend the next day blissfully logging and scanning my finds. This year, per usual, I stood in line Thursday morning with $10 in hand so I could have a first glance at the bookish goodies. Then I went back on Saturday (ostensibly to see if there were any comic books my husband might possibly want...) and came home with another round.

This year was supposed to be a big deal (kindof like last year was supposed to be a big deal--"bigger & better than ever"). Bob Hammel--long-time sports writer for the Herald Times--donated 2,000 IU and sports-related items towards the sale. I didn't notice anyone flocking towards that area.... The only area that seemed to be "bigger than ever" this year was the DVD section. Way more tables than I ever remember.  Also more record albums. The better books mystery section and regular mystery sections were about the same size as last year--but the regular mystery sections were loaded down with newer stuff (it appeared that several Janet Evanovich and David Baldacci fans had unloaded every book they owned....).

I picked up six from the better books sections and then moved on to the regular mysteries. I was beginning to think I wouldn't find anything vintage that I didn't already own (one of the difficulties with having been a collector for so long...). So...not wanting to leave without at least putting a few things in my bag, I grabbed up some more modern authors. Then I got to the last table of hardback/large paperback mysteries....bonanza! All of the books marked with an asterisk were on that last table. And the trip to the Book Fair would have been worth it for Fatal Descent--a book I never thought I'd see in the wild. And with a dust jacket, no less!

My two-day haul: 44 books [lowest # ever since I started keeping track--six found on Saturday]; 3 books on CD; 9 mystery magazines; one Charles Dickens mini-puzzle; and 2 Hoosier Hills sweatshirts. I thought about going back on Sunday (half-price day), but I just couldn't imagine that I'd missed much. I hope some vintage mystery lovers donate a ton of books for next year...

Hoosier Hills Book Fair

Faithful readers of the blog will not be surprised to learn that once again I went to the Hoosier Hills Book Fair and handed over a sizable donation to the food bank in exchange for a rolling bag full of books. I spent a very happy morning with a huge spreadsheet of books-to-be-found and filled that bag up like there would never be another book fair ever. I have logged my treasures from the first day (I'll probably go back with the hubby at some point). Today's tally (including upgrade duplicates that I picked up) is 45 books, one audio book on CD, and one Hoosier Hills t-shirt. We'll see if I pick up any more before the weekend is over. I'm not entirely sure I will...despite this year's sale being advertised as "bigger and better than ever, from my point of view it wasn't. The mystery section the better, vintage book area was only about 1/3 to 1/2 the size of the previous years. The children's section (where vintage mysteries have, in the past, been mysteriously shelved as well) wasn't well-stocked either. There were way more CDs and DVDs than before, but that's not really what i look for. I usually go back on half price day and find another good (though smaller) bunch. Not sure that will happen this year...

Here's what I found on opening day (Thursday):

Hoosier Hills Book Fair: Return Trip

It should come as no surprise that I made a return trip to the Hoosier Hills Book Fair. After all--it was half price day. I couldn't pass up an opportunity to get even bigger bargains. And I didn't. I came home with 33 more books (w/two duplicates--that past Bev forgot to cross off the To Be Found List)...that makes a two-day grand total of 94 books, 5 holiday CDs, and one Sherlock Holmes jigsaw puzzle. I'm glad I scooped that puzzle up on Thursday--because the puzzle table was pretty much wiped clean when I went back. I thought most people got tired of puzzles after doing them like crazy during the pandemic. I guess not...

Just as I do every year, I headed out to the Hoosier Hills Book Sale early in the morning on October 4th, armed with a humongous spreadsheet and a rolling shopping bag, to see what treasures I could find to bring home. I was hoping to get closer to my recording-breaking 103 books of two years ago, but I wound up just over last year's total of 55 with a two-day haul of 59 books. With more modern mysteries and modern reprints of classics than usual. And it's not just the community book fair that's been low on supply lately. For the second year in a row, I've come home from the Friends of Library clearance sales (both spring and fall) with nothing. Nada. Zilch. Hoosier Hills Book Fair

It's that time again...time to feed my book-buying habit in a big way with my yearly visit to the Hoosier Hills Food Bank Community Book Fair. Last year I attended the paid entry first day just to see if it made a difference in what I came home with. It sure seemed to--I brought home a record-breaking 103 books and a LOT of vintage mysteries. So, this year I decided to do the paid entry thing again just to see if results remained consistent. Not so much. I came home with just a little over half my haul of last year--55 books (one is destined to go to my mom) and among them is one duplicate because past Bev forgot to cross off a first edition (new Avon) Lord Peter Wimsey novel. Ah well, it doesn't seem to have been a very good year for vintage mysteries in general around here. For the first time ever, I came away from the Friends of the Library clearance sale without buying a single book. Not one (Brad thought I was sick). There just wasn't anything in my area.

Here's what this year's treasure hunt found:
