Friday Memes

Book Beginnings on Friday is a bookish meme sponsored by Katy at A Few More Pages. Here's what you do: Share the first line (or two) of the book you are currently reading on your blog or in the comments section. Include the title and author so we know what you're reading. Then, if you are so moved, let us know what your first impressions were based on that first line and if you did or did not like that sentence. Link up each week at Katy's place.

Here's mine
from The Problem of the Green Capsule by John Dickson Carr:

It began, as a certain man remembered it, at a house in Pompeii. He never forgot the hot, quiet afternoon; the silence of the Street of Tombs broken by English voices; the red oleanders in the ruined garden, and the girl in white standing in the midst of a group in sun-glasses, as though in the midst of a group of masks.

The Friday 56 is a bookish meme sponsored by Freda's Voice. It is really easy to participate. Just grab a book, any book, and turn to page 56. Find a sentence that grabs you and post it.
Here's mine from The Problem of the Green Capsule by John Dickson Carr:

"I also trust that this removes some of Major Crowe's doubts as to my sanity or my good faith; and, before any more tempers are lost this evening, can anyone oblige me with a cigarette?"

I agree with Lady D. You get a real sense of the scene.

The Friday 56 made me laugh! To, in one sentence, admit someone doubts your sanity and ask for a cigarette is pure writing brilliance!
Thanks for stopping by and I hope you have a great weekend!

Great descriptions in the opener...and the p. 56 shows an effort at a light hearted moment.

Thanks for sharing...and for visiting my blog.

I like the setting of this opening with the narrator looking back at the encounter. I will make a note of this book.
Have a good weekend.
