And if anyone by some laughable contingency had offered Chris a glamorous and exciting job, she would have cast a pall of the humdrum over it within hours of signing on.

I love the beginning. It pretty much sums up the relationship between the narrator and his father in one sentence. Thanks for sharing!
Great beginning! I wonder why he and his father were estranged? Also, I've known people like Chris in your Friday 56 selection. They seem to suck all the energy out of the room! This sounds like a book I'd enjoy reading.
