The yellow match book was lying on the seat of the taxicab. I saw it as the doorman at Garfinckel's bowed me in with a punctilio worthy of the wife of the Combined Chiefs of Staff.
It seemed to me that there was trouble ahead. I could smell it the way a sleeping dog can smell a pound of hamburger when the butcher boy opens the kitchen door.
