Book Beginnings on Friday
is a bookish meme now
sponsored by Rose City Reader (who originally inspired the meme).
Here's what you do: Share the first line
(or two) of the book you are currently
reading on your blog or in the comments
section. Include the title and author so
we know what you're reading. Then, if you
are so moved, let us know what your
first impressions were based on that first line
and if you did or did not like that sentence. Link up each week
at Gilion's place.
Here's mine from "Drawn Daggers" by C. L. Pirkis, a short story in The Penguin Book of Victorian Women in Crime by Michael Sims (ed):

Loveday Brooke, at this period of her career, was a little over thirty years of age, and could best be described in a series of negations. She was not tall, she was not short; she was not dark, she was not fair; she was neither handsome nor ugly.

Why did the father refuse to offer a reward?

Great post! I like the description of Loveday as what she was NOT. A clever idea for introducing a character.
I'm also wondering what the father should have offered a reward for.
What for it..... LOL.... k, why??? No seriously, why????
how the heck am i supposed to imagine the character if she's not anything? :P
as for the reward ... bah. for what for what? :)
