2013 Mount TBR Reading Challenge

As I mentioned last year, I am a bookaholic.  I can't let a bookstore (used or new, it doesn't matter) go by without stopping in ("just to look") and walking out with at least something--if not an armload. I wait all year for the Red Cross Book Sale in October so I can cart them out by the bagful. And, well, that means that I wind up with gigantic piles of TBR books stacked up around my backroom. I don't have a TBR shelf. Oh, no. I have "Mount TBR"...actually a whole mountain range.  And it doesn't matter that I've just spent the last year working on my mountain range with the Mount TBR Reading Challenge.  They just keep on sprouting up.

So, once again, I plan to concentrate on reading primarily from my own books this year. And you're invited to join me in knocking out some of those books that have been waiting in the wings for weeks....months...even years.

Challenge Levels (I've adjusted the levels just slightly this year):

Pike's Peak: Read 12 books from your TBR pile/s

Mount Blanc: Read 24 books from your TBR pile/s
Mt. Vancouver: Read 36 books from your TBR pile/s
Mt. Ararat: Read 48 books from your TBR piles/s
Mt. Kilimanjaro: Read 60 books from your TBR pile/s
El Toro: Read 75 books from your TBR pile/s
Mt. Everest: Read 100 books from your TBR pile/s

Mount Olympus (Mars): Read 150+ books from your TBR pile/s

And the rules:
*Once you choose your challenge level, you are locked in for at least that many books. If you find that you're on a mountain-climbing roll and want to tackle a taller mountain, then you are certainly welcome to upgrade.

*Challenge runs from January 1 to December 31, 2013.

*You may sign up anytime from now until November 30th, 2013.

*Books must be owned by you prior to January 1, 2013. No ARCs (none), no library books. No rereads. [To clarify--based on a question raised last year--the intention is to reduce the stack of books that you have bought for yourself or received as presents {birthday, Christmas, "just because," etc.}. Audiobooks and E-books may count if they are yours and they are one of your primary sources of backlogged books.]

*You may count any "currently reading" book that you begin prior to January 1--provided that you had 50% or more of the book left to finish in 2013.  I will trust you all on that.

*Books may be used to count for other challenges as well.

*Feel free to submit your list in advance (as incentive to really get those books taken care of) or to tally them as you climb.

*A blog and reviews are not necessary to participate. If you have a blog, then please post a challenge sign up and link THAT post (not your home page) into the linky below. Non-bloggers, please leave a comment declaring your challenge level--OR, if you are a member of Goodreads, I will once again put together a group for the challenge there. Feel free to sign up HERE.  And, finally, I am contemplating a review tracker for this year.  I will post a link if that works out.  ***UPDATE: Review may now be posted at links found at Review Headquarters (click link).

  1. Whoohoo! I'm definitely in, but I've got to do some planning and counting. More than likely I'll be in at the Mt. Vancouver level again this year (even with the increase :-D).

And as I mentioned earlier, I may use the 2013 challenge solely for physical books I have on my shelf! That's the one upside of the Kindle - I haven't even approached having to think about running out of space, but my bookshelf is definitely lacking space.

I'll be back in the next 2-3 weeks to link my official sign up post!

  2. Glad to have you back, Geoff! Yes, I can see the advantage of the Kindle--no lack of shelf space. But there's something about having the physical book right there....

  3. I definitely agree! There's also something to be said about used bookstores and the physical books in general being more discounted. I just love the kindle for when I travel and for my really long commutes.

  4. I might try for the Mount Blanc but will divide the 24 books over physical books and e-books, since over this year my TBR pile on Kindle grew to be almost the same amount of books as my physical one.

    So it will be 50/50 - 12 books + 12 e-books

  5. I'm definitely in!! I can at the very least aim for Pike's Peak. With my hefty teaching schedule for 2013, I get scared promising myself too much. But I acquired some delicious titles in 2012 that have not been read.

    So, thanks for hosting!

  7. Hey Bev,
Did I miss the final post to post our challenge complete post? I spent a few minutes looking this morning but haven't found it yet.

  8. Thanks Bev for letting me know about the sign up page. I published my post and then noticed that you'd adjusted the levels - so I've edited it and this is now the link to my Mount TBR Challenge. I'm aiming for Mt Ararat.

  9. Ready to start digging into my TBR piles again in 2013. Just signed up for 36 books, hope to do more. I just got an e-book reader, so those would not really count yet. Maybe next year.

  10. Yay! I signed up for Mount Blanc last year (for 2012) and easily cruised past it. I'm going for Mount Blanc again because it's achievable for me and when I go past it I feel like I've done really really well. ;)

I don't have a post up about next year's challenges yet but I will soon.

  11. I'll be doing the Mt. Blanc peak in this challenge.

I whittled down my very Old TBRs last year and the year before; now I'm going to finish that stack on start on the Newer Pile.

  12. I'm in. Since I'll finish this year's challenge with 101 books, I'm trying for Mt. Olympus for 2013.

  13. Hi, I've been looking up reading challenges and would like to try yours. I have at least 25 books I bough this year and would like to try for Mount Blanc. I never tried any of these challenges before and have just enough for this level, so I want to start slow.
    Thanks,
    Jamie

    And welcome All!

  18. I'm going for Pike's Peak, but will hopefully read more!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Going for Mt Blanc since that's the highest I can go!

  20. We have decided to go for the Mt. Kilimanjaro level. I think if I add any more books to my apartment I will be falling through the ceiling onto the people below. This challenge is very much needed. If it all goes to plan I will be reading the level specified and more.

Some of the authors I am visiting this year are:

    Stephen King
    Chris D’Lacey
    Kate Moss
    Miranda Lo

We will post our book list in the next few days please keep an eye out for it!

  21. I failed this challenge this year but I'm going to try again! I'm attempting the Mr. Ararat level and participating via Goodreads.

  22. signed up for 24 next year 2013- I managed the Pikes Peak 2013 plus a few more (21) in total so think I might make it to top of Mount Blanc:)

  23. I just linked my sign-up post and am looking forward to starting this challenge! I only committed to Pikes Peak because I'm pretty sure I can handle that, and I want to be successful for my first year participating. Hopefully I'll be able to read more, though! Thanks for hosting!

  24. I'm in! I'm signing up under level Pikes Peak for now. If I read more TBR's, I'll adjust the level accordingly. I put the challenge on Pinterest, because my blog is currently under creative review, lol.

  25. I'm in. My TBR pile is taking over the bedroom. I'm signing up for the lowest level for now, but I'm hoping to do much more than that.

  26. This is the first reading challenge I've ever signed up for, so I'm kind of excited. I'm being a little ambitious and shooting for Everest, but only because you're allowing ebooks and audio books (I hope audiobooks of the podcast variety count because I have subscribed to several). I also have about 125 kindle books downloaded and waiting. I'd like to donate most of my physical books by the end of 2013. Thanks!

  27. I'm in. I'm starting at Pike's Peak.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Welcome All! Sarah Thompson: Yes, any audio/e-books count as long as you were signed up for the podcasts before January 1.

  29. I'm in! I didn't do so well with Mt Kilimanjaro, lol, so I've scaled down for 2013. :P

  31. I have so many books that are waiting to be read..!!
But I have a question! Some of them are in italian, my first language!
Can I still sign up for this challenge? :)

  32. This will be attempt number 2 at this challenge. I failed at the 2012 one. And this year, I decided to try for more books from Mount TBR. I'm determined to complete this challenge and tackle mount tbr.

  33. Thank you for hosting this again. I did just make my 2012 Mountain and hope to do better this year by choosing the next highest peak!

I should have checked back for update links but it rather slipped my mind. However, will do so this year to ensure I am keeping on track.

  34. Sorry, I'm late for signing up, but been busy the last few weeks, and also I am cutting back on my challenges for 2013 to try and read some of my TBR pile this year. However, I decided to join this one again this year. I'm doing good, this is only number 3 challenge for 2013.

    ReplyDelete
  35. This is definitely a challenge I need to do! I am aiming for Mount Blanc to start with.
    Thanks for hosting. :D

    ReplyDelete
  36. @Serena: Of course! Language the book is written in does not matter for the challenge. If you can read it, it counts!

    ReplyDelete
  37. I'll take your Mount Blanc challenge... actually, I'm already participating in the Deliberate Reader's challenge, so this just fits right in. I'd love to link back to your challenge from my blog post (http://bit.ly/TKYVsz), but I didn't see the code for your button anywhere. Did I miss it?

  38. I participated in a challenge like this in 2011, so I'm excited to find your challenge this year! Thanks so much for hosting!

  43. Sounds like the perfect challenge to get me started on my growing TBR piles! Thanks for hosting, I'm looking forward to getting started.

  44. Love this challenge, and I'm hoping to get a nosebleed from climbing some high tbr mountains successfully!

  45. Sounds like fun! I'm beginning to fear dying under a collapsed pile of my TBR books. Since I also belong to two book clubs, I think I'd better stick to the Pike's Peak level for this challenge.

  47. This is my first year in the challenge, and I'm going to attempt Pike's Peak. Looking forward to it.

  48. I found your challenge via goodreads and am so excited to sign up!
I've been wanting to do something that will help reduce my amount of books, so this is great! :)

  49. Pike's Peak for me once again. Thanks for hosting it again Bev.

  50. Oh. My. Goodness. 105 of you already! It's amazing how many TBR Mountain Ranges there are out there.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I have already, although I didn't realize that there was a cool Reading Challenge organized around this, promised myself that I will read at least two books from my TBR list a month this year.

Hence, I'm signing up for a Mount Blanc.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Hopefully I am not too late to join. Mt. Vancuvar that will be my challenge. These books I have in my list for a long time and this year I have promised myself to complete them.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I'm game (again) for this, although I did kind of blow it last year due to losing sight in my left eye right after I'd piled up more books to hit the Everest mark. Consequently this year will be made up primarily of audiobooks, I think, and some ebooks, although I'll get some dead trees in there as well.

And I'll cut right to the chase and start at Everest. Time to list 'em on my LJ, and possibly on Goodreads as well. :)

    ReplyDelete
  54. David: Glad you're back for another round! So sorry to hear about your left eye. I hope things are going as well as possible for you!

  55. Wasnt sure where to post my TBR tally for January but i managed 9 books =D Please click on this link for my reviews: http://read2review.com/events-reading-group/current-events/2013-mount-tbr-reading-challenge/

  56. Love this challenge, as I tend to forget about books once I put them on my tbr shelf. Sigh--so many wonderful books!

I plan to go for Mount Blanc and will blog about it and link next week.

    Thanks for doing this!

  57. Been meaning to do this for a while. Finally put it up. A bit late, but I am thankful you did not set a deadline to let those of us latecomers (a.k.a. people busy with other things) participate. Looking forward to also seeing what others read.

    Best, and keep on blogging.

  58. Just realised I have passed the Mt Arrat mark so am upgrading to Mt Kilimanjara if that's okay - left Pikes Peak way behind:) - working out what I still have to read for my other challenges I should just reach 60 by end of year and hopefully have reduced pile - although. . .although - I have been buying books all the time - so by next year will prob be the same pile to read through:)
