Friday Memes

I missed last week because I was busy book-binging at the Red Cross Book Sale (followed by the logging of the books on my spreadsheet and rearranging my back room to make room for the new purchases).  Here are this week's entries:


Book Beginnings on Friday is a bookish meme now sponsored by Rose City Reader (who originally inspired the meme). Here's what you do: Share the first line (or two) of the book you are currently reading on your blog or in the comments section. Include the title and author so we know what you're reading. Then, if you are so moved, let us know what your first impressions were based on that first line and if you did or did not like that sentence. Link up each week at Gilion's place.

    I haven't read any Sherlock Holmes, but I am definitely curious.

    I saw Sherlock somewhere else today too and commented about how the hubby like Sherlock unless he comes in the form of Robert Downey JR, then I like him too... lol

    I have read a couple of Sherlock stories, but not this one. Sounds good.

    Hi Bev,

    I have read all of the original Holmes stories by Conan Doyle, however I haven't so far been tempted by any of the spin-off stories.

    If I stay true to my policy that 'classics' shouldn't be manipulated for renewed gain by more modern authors, then I shall definitely be giving this one a miss, I'm afraid ..... but your teaser and 56 lines, do sound so good!!

    I hope that you are enjoying the book and I shall await your review and final verdict.

    I love Holmes, wish Conan Doyle had written more. Looking forward to your review. If it lives up to the promise, I would love to read it.

    That's a good beginning. Does Frank Thomas write a lot of Sherlock Holmes stories? I've never heard of him.

    Yvonne (fictionbooks): Generally speaking I'm not a fan of other authors making good on other's work. But there have been some nicely done Holmes pastiches over the years. This--I'm afraid isn't going to go down as one of them (unless something changes my mind in the last 1/3 of the book).

    Amber: Thomas wrote about 7-9 of these. I don't know if the others are any better than this one (and don't plan to find out). I'm going to finish it (just to see what really happened), but my advice is to give it a miss.

    Yvonne (Socrates Book Reviews): Holmes is great! You should definitely read the originals...and there are some good ones out there that aren't by Doyle.
