Friday Memes

Book Beginnings on Friday is a bookish meme now sponsored by Rose City Reader (who originally inspired the meme). Here's what you do: Share the first line (or two) of the book you are currently reading on your blog or in the comments section. Include the title and author so we know what you're reading. Then, if you are so moved, let us know what your first impressions were based on that first line and if you did or did not like that sentence. Link up each week at Gilion's place.

Here's mine from Something to Kill For by Susan Holtzer:

"Anneke, would you grab those dolls?" Joyce McCarthy yanked a carton from under the rickety table and began sweeping brilliantly colored dishes into it, apparently heedless of their fragility.

{Something to Kill For is a book about murder on the garage sale circuit.  Sounds like we're starting right up in the middle of a sale.}

The Friday 56 is a bookish meme sponsored by Freda's Voice. It is really easy to participate. Just grab a book, any book, and turn to page 56. Find a sentence that grabs you and post it.
Here's mine from Something to Kill For by Susan Holtzer:
"Has anyone ever told you you have the face of an Erté odalisque?" he asked her, and when she burst out laughing he made a mock grimace. "Gee, that line usually works a lot better."

  1. Haha. I like the Friday 56. Don't all the faces look the same? sort of siren-esque?...it's not usually the face they're remembered for, or at least I don't think they are. Sounds like a fun read.

    Here's my Book beginning:

  5. Perfect for this time of year! I found 4 or 5 vintage mysteries at garage sales this week. Maybe I was part of a murder mystery and didn't realize . . .

    Thanks for participating in Book Beginnings!

Sorry folks, but I have been getting an incredible amount of spam. I have adjusted my settings and all messages will be moderated from now on. If that does not take care of the problem then I will have to go to the "Prove You're Not a Robot" thing--which I hate as much as you do.

If your name does not appear automatically, please tell me your name in the comment. Otherwise you will just show up as "Unknown." Thanks!
