Saturday Snapshot: May 19

Saturday Snapshot is a meme hosted by Alyce at At Home with Books. All you have to do is "post a photo that you (or a friend or family member) have taken and then leave a direct link to your post in the Mr. Linky on [her] blog. Photos can be old or new, and be of anything as long as they are clean and appropriate for all eyes to see. How much detail you give is up to you." All she asks is that you don't just post random photos that you find online. (Click picture for close-up).

Earlier this month, I tried to get some pictures of the "Super Moon."  I used various settings and I'm not sure that I'm really happy with any of them, but here are the best of what I got (the middle one is using "night vision"....

    Moon shots are hard, and the "ready" set ups are usually not good enough to make them very good. The typical thing is that the moon gets too bright, and you loose all those color differences you can see with your eyes. You really need manual settings to force the camera to do what you want, and a tripod or some other steady surface to keep the camera still enough.

    I took a picture of the moon a few weeks ago that I'm rather pleased with. The camera was on manual, on a tripod with remote control. The settings were aperture f/6,3, ISO 100 and shutter time 1/10sec. You can see it here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/evamos/6987043562/

    Moon shots are hard. I failed dismally with trying to take a super moon photo. Congratulations on getting some shots, I like the third one with the hanging leaf.

    My fave is the third with the branches and leaves to give the viewer a perspective on your view ... it WAS an amazing moon that night wasn't it? Lovely!

    It's interesting that the night vision shot looks a little green. I think you did a great job and like the bottom one best.

    I like the middle one best. I'm no good at moon shots, so I can only enjoy other people's. Maybe someday I'll take a photography class and buy a decent camera. Here's Mine

    That third one is perfect the leaf silhouette is lovely, and gives the viewer a better perspective on what they're looking at. Lovely!

    I debated trying to frame my moon photo with something in perspective, but then those shots didn't turn out for me. The one with the leaf is very cool and atmospheric! I used a bunch of different settings, and surprisingly the one that worked best was the portrait setting with flash. I think it helped to counter the glow from the moon. I was shocked though because I assumed the night settings would be best.

    I think these are amazing - I have never ever managed to get any pictures of the moon. I need a much better camera I think.

    What Eva said... if you want sharpness you have to go manual and use a tripod. Otherwise you will get a nice, soft glow. I like that effect in your last shot where you framed it with a leaf.

    Moon shots are difficult. I'm still working on figuring out the best settings.

    I'm still dickering around with the point and shoot which makes the moon look like a shiny dime or something. Moon shots are hard!
