Wake for a Lady by H. W. Roden: Lots of dangerous doings in a small town, one which produces a lady known only by her exotic nickname: Gorgeous. She is really one Veronica O'Hara, and she wants to get into movies. She thinks that knowing PR man Johnny Knight will be enough.
Also in this town is a loathsome racketeer named Farino, masquerading as a "show manager." Intimidating threats followed by a murder force Johnny and "Gorgeous" to yell for help, and who should answer the call other than johnny's old friend, Sid Ames, a private eye who won't be intimidated by anyone.
The Doctor Dines in Prague by Robin Hathaway: Dr. Andrew Fenimore is a Philadelphia general physician who still makes house calls. It has been his habit to call his Czech cousin every week, and he is especially eager to be in touch with her and her family now, as Anna is to bring her husband, Vlasta, to Philadelphia for heart surgery soon. When he is unable to reach them, he immediately flies back to Prague. If his concern is misplaced, well, he'd always meant to visit the "most beautiful city in Europe," where his mother grew up. And, he'll just bring his cousins back to the states with him. But it is not simple, and Fenimore pulls in his lover, his secretary, and the street urchin turned teenaged helper, bringing them all to the beautiful old city, where they become tangled with a psychopath who is planning to overthrow the government and declare himself ruler of the country, an agenda that involves a talented maker of puppets, the rescue of a young child, and murder.Books that spark my interest:
