Wondrous Words Wednesday

Kathy over at Bermudaonion's Weblog hosts Wondrous Words Wednesday. If you come across a word (or two) while reading that is new to you and would like to share your new knowledge, then hop over to Kathy's place and link up!

Here's what I've got this week from The Wyndham Case by Jill Paton Walsh (p. 34):

Adumbrating (form of adumbrate):

1. To give a sketchy outline of.
2. To prefigure indistinctly; foreshadow.
3. To disclose partially or guardedly.
4. To overshadow; shadow or obscure.
[from The Free Dictionary]

Context:

We must have a care; even joking about a dishonourable manoevre such as we have been adumbrating tonight, leave alone putting into practice, might deter future benefactors.

  1. This is one I knew! Not that one would use it everyday... but nice. I only knew meanings 1 & 2 though. Thanks!

  2. I like it, though it seems like it would be difficult to say on a regular basis. Thanks for sharing. If you get a chance, my words are here.

Sorry folks, but I have been getting an incredible amount of spam. I have adjusted my settings and all messages will be moderated from now on. If that does not take care of the problem then I will have to go to the "Prove You're Not a Robot" thing--which I hate as much as you do.

If your name does not appear automatically, please tell me your name in the comment. Otherwise you will just show up as "Unknown." Thanks!
