Book Beginnings on Friday

Book Beginnings on Friday is a bookish meme sponsored by Katy at A Few More Pages. Here's what you do: share the first line (or two) of the book you are currently reading on your blog or in the comments section . Include the title and author so we know what you're reading. Then, if you are so moved, let us know what your first impressions were based on that first line, and if you liked or did not like that sentence. Link-up each week at Katy's place.

Here's mine from We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson:

My name is Mary Katherine Blackwood.
[Um. Okay. Let's add one more and see where that gets us]

I am eighteen years old, and I live with my sister Constance.
[Great. Anything interesting to tell us???]

I have often thought that with any luck at all I could have been born a werewolf, because the two middle fingers on both my hands are the same length, but I have had to be content with what I had.
[There we go!]

  1. So glad you went all the way to sentence 3! I'll be everyone who reads this checks their middle two fingers :-)

  2. I loved We Have Always Lived in the Castle! I read it for a book club discussion, which I think made me realize even more things I wouldn't have understood otherwise. I hope you enjoy it :)

  3. Yep that third sentence draws you in.

I've only read Shirley Jackson's short story The Lottery, but I might need to check out more of her work.

  4. Great start, and I adore the title. But, darn it, my two middle fingers have different lenghts ;-)

  7. Ha! I'm glad you included a few more sentences because that first line was kind of boring. ;)

Thanks for participating in Book Beginnings!

Sorry folks, but I have been getting an incredible amount of spam. I have adjusted my settings and all messages will be moderated from now on. If that does not take care of the problem then I will have to go to the "Prove You're Not a Robot" thing--which I hate as much as you do.

If your name does not appear automatically, please tell me your name in the comment. Otherwise you will just show up as "Unknown." Thanks!
