My Teaser from Lady Fortescue Steps Out by Marion Chesney (page 31):
For the rest of the week, Sir Philip raided during the night and sold the stuff during the day, so that by the end of his stay he was able to tip the butler and the housekeeper handsomely, so that when they subsequently found a surprising amount of stuff missing from the larder, they blamed a housemaid who had left the week before.

Poor housemaid - hope she gets even! Haven't read anything by Chesney in a long, long time. This sounds like a good one. Excellent teaser!
