Somebody tried telling me the Perry Mason books were in the same category, and I looked at him like he was crazy. They don't even come close to having that gritty feel to them, at least not to me.Ryanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17786139533776263328noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5779338627192492408.post-19581347053503298752014-06-20T20:14:15.508-04:002014-06-20T20:14:15.508-04:00P.S. Oh well.
Great review still.fredamanshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12445217103291725907noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5779338627192492408.post-62816876261146784392014-06-20T15:38:15.363-04:002014-06-20T15:38:15.363-04:00John, I think the biggest thing that has turned me...John, I think the biggest thing that has turned me off is so many of the first person narratives I've read recently have been first person present tense (which the Spenser novel is not, thankfully). That comes across as very stilted--as if the narrator is watching her/himself do things and telling about it right at the moment of doing.

Many first person past-tense have the same problem--I feel as if the the narrator is telling the story as if they had watched it happen rather than were the actual participant. If you're going to tell the story in that fashion, then why not use another narrator--whether it is a Watson telling the story or some other narrator. I just seem to prefer the third-person narration.

There are, of course, exceptions. Rebecca is a notable one. There have been others.Bev Hankinshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01127476456755776574noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5779338627192492408.post-50060448758857588832014-06-20T14:44:35.428-04:002014-06-20T14:44:35.428-04:00This comment has been removed by the author.J F Norrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06473487417479127354noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5779338627192492408.post-39632303099540888852014-06-20T14:44:19.274-04:002014-06-20T14:44:19.274-04:00"And I'm also not a huge fan of first per..."And I'm also not a huge fan of first person narrative."

Really? I have never heard anyone admit to this before. What is it about 1st person that bothers you? It tends to be the most popular way to write a novel. Kind of hard to avoid when reading fiction.

To date this is the only Spenser novel I've ever read. I liked it for the bibliomystery element.
