Friday Memes

Book Beginnings on Friday is a bookish meme sponsored by Katy at A Few More Pages. Here's what you do: Share the first line (or two) of the book you are currently reading on your blog or in the comments section. Include the title and author so we know what you're reading. Then, if you are so moved, let us know what your first impressions were based on that first line and if you did or did not like that sentence. Link up each week at Katy's place.

Here's mine
from "The Beauty Specialist" a novella by Leslie Charteris in Great British Detectives by Martin H Greenberg & Edward D Hoch, eds.:

The fact that Simon Templar had never heard of the "Z-Man" was merely tremendous proof that the Z-Man himself, his victims, and the police authorities had joined forces in a monumental consipiracy of silence.

The Friday 56 is a bookish meme sponsored by Freda's Voice. It is really easy to participate.

*Grab a book, any book.
*Turn to page 56.

*Find any sentence that grabs you.

*Post it.

*Link up at Freda's site.

I took the risk of lying to you in London because it was too urgent to go into explanations.

Great opening and a great teaser. I have been on a mystery book jag -- vintage mysteries in particular -- so this one appeals to me. I'll go look it up.

Hi Bev,

But Simon Templar knew everything, no-one could hide from him!!
LOL

What some memories you have stirred up with this post. I was an avid viewer of 'The Saint' when it was on television ... Roger Moore or Ian Ogilvie, both dashing and handsome, but which was the best Simon Templar??

This looks like a great book, I shall definitely look out for it.

@Yvonne: I've only seen a few of the episodes with Roger Moore. I didn't realize anyone else played the Saint.

Ooh who's this mysterious 'Z-Man'?! The page 56 excerpt has me wondering what's going on, too... I want to read more!

But if Simon Templar doesn't know who the Z-Man is does the Z-Man exist? It all sounds very mysterious and intriguing.

I agree, if Simon Templar doesn't know about him, then he does not exist.
Sounds like a fun book.
